BKPM reveals Uber Status in Indonesia

JAKARTA (IndoTelko) - The Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) finally reveals the status of ridesharing company, Uber. in Indonesia.

Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Franky Sibarani said that currently the Uber Asia Limited transportation service providers has only the permission for Representative Office of Foreign Company (KPPA).

"Referring to the Decree of the Head of BKPM No. 22 of 2001, Foreign company's representative are not allowed to conduct commercial activities, including buying and selling goods and services in Indonesia. The role representative office is limited as a supervisor, liaison, coordinator and take care of the interests of the companies 'head office'," said Franky in his official statement.

He suggested that Uber to consult directly related to the field of business that they will be run. "Investors are asked to obey and respect the laws and regulations in force in Indonesia. All forms of investment activities in Indonesia, either by the local or foreign Investors must comply with the regulations and must have a license in accordance with the provisions of applicable laws and regulations without exception," said Franky.

The Investment regulator's Deputy for Investment Services Lestari Indah revealed Uber apply for permission to the field of software publishing business, merely make the application required by the consumer, there is no buying and selling goods and services outside of the activity.

If the applied permit is for the taxi transportation business, in the Presidential Decree No. 39 of 2014 on the List of Business Fields that are Closed and Open Business with Requirements in the Field of Investment stated that the taxi transportation business or people land transport is closed to Foreign Direct Investment.

"Today Uber is yet listed on one of these permits. We urge that Uber to immediately consult directly to the investment board related to their permit and the business to be run," he said.(es)
